Stained
Glass Book Marks
With summer
fast approaching, it seemed a good time to look at crafts that are
easy to do with large groups of children. These are great Vacation
Bible School or party crafts.
You will
need:
- clear Contac®
paper
- tissue paper
in a variety of colors
- pencil
- scissors
- hole punch
- yarn
- small piece
of thin cardboard to create a template
Cut out a book
mark template from the thin cardboard. In the past I have used a
cross, but a rectangular book mark shape will work, too. Use this
template to trace one per child on the Contac® paper. Do not
cut the crosses out, but do cut them apart so that they are each
on an individual piece of Contac® paper. Cut the tissue paper
into very small pieces. These are the stained glass pieces. They
can be randomly cut, or you can use precut confetti.
Each child receives
a Contac® paper cross and another blank piece of Contac®
paper of equal size. Peel the backing from the piece of Contac®
paper with the cross. Allow the children to sprinkle tissue paper
onto the sticky side of the Contac® paper. Turn the piece on
its side to dump off any pieces that don't stick. Peel the backing
off the second piece of Contac® paper and place over the tissue
paper side of the first piece. Smooth the pieces until they are
securely stuck. Follow the traced lines of the cross to cut out
the book mark. Punch a hole at the top of the cross and add a loop
of yarn to finish the book mark.
You can find
many inexpensive already prepared crafts at the Oriental

complicated crafts are also available. Here are a few pictures of
what is available.

tissue roll |
 |
9
x 12 green, yellow and white construction paper |
 |
tissue
paper in a variety of colors |
 |

 |
glue |

What to do:
- Roll a sheet
of yellow and green construction paper together so that you have
a 9-inch long roll that will fit inside the toilet tissue roll.
Staple the construction paper roll so that it doesn't unroll.
Staple only the part that will fit inside the toilet tissue roll.
- Cut half
inch wide strips to form a fringe from the other end of the construction
paper roll. These will be the stems of your flowers.
- Insert the
construction paper roll into the toilet tissue roll and staple
in place.
- Cut white
construction paper to cover the toilet tissue roll (It will cover
up your staples.) Color the paper as you desire, then glue it
to the toilet tissue roll.
- Cut the tissue
paper into 1 1/2 inch squares.
- Stand the
toilet paper tube up so that the construction paper stems cascade
down around the outside.
- Crumple a
