  • Fitness For Dummies®
    by Suzanne Schlosberg, Liz, Neporent
    ISBN: 0764551671
    Amazon.com
The original Fitness for Dummies , published in 1996, was a real breakthrough: a book that took a reader through all the fitness basics without being offputtingly complicated or insultingly simplistic. This second edition only improves on that tough balancing act. The authors are two of the most experienced fitness writers in the business--Suzanne Schlosberg is a longtime contributor to Shape and Liz Neporent is a veteran personal trainer, corporate fitness consultant, and contributor to Shape and The New York Times . In addition to being experienced at explaining exercise, they're both exercise junkies, and their firsthand knowledge and love of the topic is evident throughout.

Each section of the book--whether dealing with basic fitness issues, cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility, joining a gym, or exercising at home--offers a combination of well-researched, easily understandable information, combined with informed opinion. For example, in chapters discussing exercise equipment, they're able to offer personal reactions to the gear--mentioning that Life Fitness makes great exercise bikes but a treadmill they don't care for.

New information in this second edition includes "100 Reasons to Break a Sweat," featuring the latest research on exercise benefits; sections incorporating Internet fitness resources; and beefed-up exercise-video advice. That latter section includes tips about avoiding rip-offs (older videos are sometimes repackaged, with new covers promising different benefits) and a handy guide to choosing the best video instructors for different fitness levels.

The core information, though, is the best reason to buy this edition of Fitness for Dummies. Exercise science is complicated, but this book makes it as simple--and entertaining--as it can possibly be. --Lou Schuler

  • How & When to Tell Your Kids About Sex: A Lifelong Approach to Shaping Your Child's Sexual Character
by Stanton L. Jones, Brenna B. Jones
    ISBN: 0891097511
Our children are inundated with messages and information about sex. Everywhere they turn-in our neighborhoods, in the schools, in the media-they are bombarded with discussions, stories, jokes, mixed messages, and debate about sexuality. How can parents have a significant input amid such a din-much of which seems beyond their control?

Stan and Brenna Jones suggest that sex education is really not so much a matter of providing information as it is a matter of deliberate character formation. How our children act in this critical area will not be affected by how much information they have stored away. It won't even be primarily affected by the Bible verses they have memorized, or the warnings we give them. First and foremost, their behavior will be determined by their character. What our children do will be determined by who they are at that particular moment in time.

  • Sex As God's Gift

    ISBN: B00005NRQS
This six-part series has been developed for 14- and 15-year-olds to prepare them for the sexual decisions they will face. The series features Mary Ronan, a registered nurse who has worked with teens for over ten years. Mary is a gifted communicator who helps prepare young teens to think through major choices, especially those dealing with love, sex and relationships. “This is a series every young teen needs to see” is a comment we’ve heard over and over again from the students Mary speaks to.

    The six programs are
    1. Making Good Decisions
See how the media erodes our values and influences our decisions. How do we make good decisions? Why is this such a critical time in our lives to make good decisions?

    2. STDs and Pregnancy
Is there any such thing as truly safe sex? Mary teaches about the most common STDs and explains how easy they are to contract. Many sexually active youth are infected with one or more STDs and don't even know it. Mary explains that most STDs can be contracted through oral sex just as easily as intercourse. She also tells youth how easy it is to get pregnant.

    3. The Reality of Teen Pregnancy
What is it like to be pregnant as an unmarried teen? Mary walks through the decisions youth will need to make. Abortion may seem like an easy and clean remedy to teen pregnancy, but it is not. Mary explains the reality of abortion. She shares stories from teens who have had abortions and the horror they have been through. Teens will see how much it costs to have and raise a baby and why most teenage motheres will live in poverty for many years. Boys will also learn of the new economic realitites they face if they father a child, as it will have an economic impact on them for the next 18 years.

    4. Sexuality as a Gift
In this program Mary shows how sex is a wonderful gift from God. We see how we only hurt ourselves if we misuse the gift of sex. Mary helps teens to understand the consequences of premarital sex and that God wants us to appreciate sex as His gift and the means to create life with Him. Young people will be in a much better position to deal with internal sexual pressures, peer pressures and misinformation the media feeds them.

    5. Relationships
You learn what characteristics make up a healthy relationship and how they should be treated. How do you know if you can trust someone? We learn that our feelings don't make others trustworthy. Mary helps students think about trust and parental relationships. Finally, we examine relationships in light of I Corinthians 13.

    6. Questions and Answers
In this session Mary answers questions from the youth in the audience in a direct manner. How do you get STDs? If I have premarital sex, what are the chances that I will get an STD? How does God feel about homosexuality? Is pornogrophy a sin? Is foreplay breaking chastity?

  • You Can't Take Your Body To A Repair Shop
by Fred, M.D. Ehrlich, Harriet Ziefert, Amanda Haley (Illustrator)
    ISBN: 1593540574
Jam-packed with information -- grown-ups will learn from this book, too! It's written by a doctor with more than thirty years experience treating children and families. The latest addition to the popular You Can't... series focuses on common illnesses that affect children. Fred Ehrlich explains what makes you sick in easy-to-understand prose. He makes distinctions, such as between bacteria and virus, clear. At once engaging and sympathetic, Dr. Ehrlich touches on everyday illnesses such as: tummy aches, vomiting, diarrhea, colds and flu, warts and pimples, and various allergies. In the time-tested format that made You Can't Taste a Pickle with Your Ear so funny, the book includes humorous verse to complement the matter-of-fact text and is delightfully punctuated by Amanda Haley's madcap illustrations to ensure a tone that is at once light and reassuring. In fact, Dr. Ehrlich is careful not to frighten children, reminding us all that most of the time our bodies work just fine, and that even when we're sick, our bodies usually get well by themselves.
