The Teacher’s Edition of Skills for Literary Analysis gives parents a thorough grounding on the purpose behind the course and the goals the teacher can hope to achieve. Each lesson includes a section on that lesson’s goals or objectives, strategies for meeting those goals, and ways to evaluate whether they have been met. The strategy section outlines the assignments for each lesson. Each lesson includes sample essay answers and answers to questions in the student book. A test is also provided for each lesson. The resources found in the student appendices are also found in this teacher edition.

If you have never taught one of Stobaugh’s literature courses, I highly recommend that you watch the accompanying DVD. It contains what is essentially a two hour workshop on how to teach the course including an introduction to the course, an explanation of the role of teacher and student, the scope and sequence for each lesson, a sample lesson for the teacher, and a sample lesson for the student. The coursework can seem overwhelming at first. Stobaugh’s presentation on the DVD is both encouraging and helpful. He makes clear, that although the book itself seems full of too much to do, there are ways of doing the work without getting overwhelmed.
