ScienceSaurus 6-8: A Student Handbook

Printer Friendly Version

Publisher: Great Source Education Group

List Price: Softcover $16.75, Hardcover $19.95

Ages: 12-14 Years

Reviewed By: Beverly Krueger

ScienceSaurus 6-8 is another of the Great Source Education themed handbooks. This full-color, softcover edition has 544 pages of information covering topics in life science, earth science, physical science, environmental science, and technology. Information is presented in easy-to-understand language with excellent explanations of scientific terminology and is appropriate for the typical middle school student. Charts, diagrams, and illustrations supply additional information without being distracting.

Introductory sections of the text explain the scientific method, how to write lab reports, how to develop your own scientific investigations and specifics in how to work in a science lab and with the basic equipment most middle-schoolers encounter in middle school science. These sections will prepare students for the activities suggested in the accompanying daybooks.

Three science daybooks are available to accompany this handbook. They cover life science, earth science, and physical science. These daybooks use the handbook as the basis for most of the science taught, but also use some of the other Great Source handbooks to incorporate language arts and math skills into the lessons. The daybooks provide a way for students to synthesize what they are reading and activities that tie into the concepts being taught. Activities use easy-to-find materials. There is preparation time required by the homeschool parent, but material listings in the daybook teacher's edition should allow parents to keep on top of this.

The ScienceSaurus 6-8 Student Handbook makes a handy science reference for those creating their own lessons. You do not need to purchase the daybooks to get excellent value from this book. When used with the daybooks, you have a complete science curriculum for 6th through 8th grades. An entire softcover set of student materials is available at Great Source for $40.75.
