Have you ever known exactly what you wanted to say, but couldn't think of the right word to save your life? I'm not referring to synonyms and antonyms here, but to specifics. Perhaps you're a student writing a story about sailors and you know they are famous for singing a specific type of song. With the Flip Dictionary in hand, you'll find out what they sing in a matter of seconds. It's set up like a dictionary, so you need only turn to "song", then look down the list until you find "song, sailors':" and voila! You see that you are thinking of a sailors' chantey or shanty.

The Flip Dictionary contains definitions too, of course. It also offers a wealth of tables. For instance, if you take a glance at the pages that deal with music, you will find tables listing musical terms ("musical break: rest"); music directions and notations ("louder: crescendo"); music genres, varieties and styles (chant...jazz...spiritual...) and musical instruments (listed by section, ie., "Brass Wind Instruments"). You will discover tables for a variety of subject areas from Academic Degrees (listed by both "Name/Abbreviation" and "Abbreviation/Name") to Weights and Measures and beyond.

This book may not be one of life's necessities, but it can make any writer's work much easier, and if you enjoy words it's a lot of fun!
